Describing the memories of the riots, Taapsee said that my parents were not married at that time. His mother lived in East Delhi and his father lived in Shakti Nagar. Taapsee’s father has told about this many times. His mother used to say that the area where she lived was safe, but where his father lived in Shakti Nagar, his family was the only Sikh family.
People were standing in front of the house with swords and petrol bombs
Taapsee said that the rioters had understood that people were inside after seeing the car parked in front of their house. People had come to the door of our house with swords and petrol bombs. My family members had switched off all the lights in the house and hid. There was no point in running because we knew we were surrounded.
Tenants saved Taapsee’s family
Fortunately, the house where Taapsee’s family used to live was rented by four other families. All these were Hindu families. These people had protected Taapsee’s family from the rioters. They said that my family members have fled. But those tenants knew that we are inside the house only. The rioters burnt our car, but we were saved.
Taapsee Pannu’s family bore the pain of Sikh riots
Taapsee Pannu said that what happened to my family during the riots was never going to be forgotten. Thousands of people had lost their loved ones in the 1984 Sikh riots. Most of the Sikh families were involved in this. Many films have been made on these riots. Last year, ‘Jogi’ was released on Netflix, which was based on the Sikh riots.
