He further wrote, “A mutual admiration started between Sahab and Amit ji. Amit ji said that sir is a very good person. He always plays a father figure to anyone who seeks his guidance. One day, late at night, writer-duo Salim-Javed invited Amit ji to come to Sahab’s house without any appointment. Amit ji was reluctant, as it was never his habit to take such concessions, especially with elders.
They said all was well, they went towards Sahib’s bungalow and came to know from the watchman that Sahib had retired for the day and was in his bedroom. Amit ji told Salim-Javed that they should leave, but asked the watchman to inform Sahab that his friends had come to meet him.
The next moment, the lights in the living room were turned on and his personal servant escorted him inside. Sir came down from his bedroom smiling. Even at that supernatural hour, he was hospitable, told him old tales till 4:00 in the morning, and all three reluctantly bade farewell to Sahib. Such was his care and warmth.”
Saira Banu further wrote, “Amit ji once said that the history of Indian cinema would be before Dilip Sahab and after Dilip Sahab because of his impeccable presence. When you measure a journey, you never change the milestones. Dilip Sahab is a milestone in our film industry.
Sahab has appreciated Amitabh’s work personally and publicly. At the premiere of ‘Black’, he waited outside the theater until Amit ji came out, and then went up to him, held his hand warmly and looked into his eyes for what seemed like an eternity .
Amitabh says I didn’t even utter a word, but his eyes spoke the most powerful words that no one ever spoke to me. Later, whenever Sahab was admitted to Lilavati Hospital, Amit ji was so kind that after his shoots, he used to visit Sahab suddenly in the evening. Sahab definitely felt better in his company and he soon came home. It was always a memorable event.”
