Naveen Singh Bhardwaj, Mumbai – Badhaai Do, even though the title may suggest that the story will revolve around a wedding or celebration, here this story is innovative, interesting. Badhaai Do depicts the emotions of the LGBTQ community of the society, with a little romance, a little comedy and a sweet syrup of many emotions.
This story is about two families of Dehradun. Ek Hai – Fit and Hansome Inspector Shardul Thakur is worried about getting a transfer from Mahila Thana. On the other hand Suman Singh “Sumi” is a physical education teacher. The families of both of them are after them regarding their marriage. The trailer has already revealed that both are homosexual characters. Badhaai Do’s tweet starts from the very first scene of the film. When Sumi reaches out to meet a girl through a dating app, it is revealed that she is a boy… who was talking to Sumi as a girl. When Sumi reaches the police station with a complaint, she encounters Inspector Shardul there.
Now Inspector Sahib, who is gay himself, approaches Sumi with a proposal that if both of them get married, then they will get relief from the family’s chik-chik and both of them will also get the freedom to live with their partners. After marriage, both spend time with their respective partners away from Dehradun. Sumi’s partner is a doctor, while Shardul’s boyfriend is an MBA student.
But Badhaai Do, there is a film ahead of Badhaai Ho… that means after marriage, now the family members also want a child. Inspector Shardul gets a house in the police quarter, yet he lives in fear that no one will come to know. Meanwhile, she also gets a breakup with her boyfriend. Shardul’s mother arrives at their house so that she herself can see under her own supervision why her son and daughter-in-law are not carrying on the lineage. And then it is revealed, the truth of these two is revealed.
To know what will happen then, watch the film… But know that congratulations are the hallmark of a new thinking. Amidst all the films coming up on homosexuality, this story is woven in the Indian scenario. The confusion of families is shown.
Badhaai Do Ki Jaan Hai is the story and screenplay of Suman, Akshay and Harshvardhan. All the spices have been put in it. An attempt has been made to fabricate this story in such a way that homosexuality is not a disease… but the forcibly covered up with a shackle of shame should be removed. The scene in the film where Sumi and Shardul reveal their truth in front of their family is very neatly written. Director Harshvardhan has kept the entire department of Badhaai Do tight, has taken the best of all. And put a tightened film on the table.
Swapnil’s camera is the life of the film and Keerti’s editing has kept the pace of the film going.
Coming to the performances, Seema Pahwa and Sheeba Chadha seem to be the perfect choices for the role of mummies. Emotion and comedy both come in their presence. Proof of his fitness, Rajkumar has donned the robes of a Dabangg Inspector, playing a homosexual character… for him there should be applause. Bhumi’s performance in Sumi’s character is commendable… Bhumi is an amazing actress. Gulshan Devaiah has left his mark in the cameo character.
With great performances, great story and without cluttering up too many classrooms, Badhaai Ho teaches, laughs and entertains.
Congratulations 4 stars
