UPSC Exam: The number of women who qualified for the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in the year 2000 was 85. Whereas, in 2019 UPSC CSE The number of women who cleared the tax service and joined was 220. In the 21st century, there has been a steady increase in the number of women appearing for UPSC, one of the toughest examinations in the world. However, statistics show that the success rate of women applicants in the Civil Services Examination is continuously decreasing.

Only 0.12 per cent of the women who registered for the UPSC CSE exam in 2019 qualified. Through the Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC, Group A and Group B level officers are appointed in different departments of the Central Government. Usually this exam is dominated by female candidates. Gradually increasing participation of women is being seen in this examination. All this data is till 2019.

This is how the number of women candidates increased

The data shows that in 2001, the number of women candidates who applied for the civil service exam was 47,392. In the annual report released by UPSC, it was said that in 2011 this number increased to 1,35,075, which reached 3,67,085 by 2019. In 2019, the maximum number of women candidates applied for the UPSC exam.

The reason for the increase in the number of women candidates

In fact, the number of women studying at the university and college level has increased. Because of this, they have come to know about the UPSC exam, due to which the number of women candidates has increased. Admission is being taken by girl students in Political Science (Honours), so that they can register for the exam. Many times the girl students also give tests to check their abilities.

    Reason for low success rate

Even though the number of women candidates appearing for the UPSC exam has increased, their success rate in the exam is decreasing year by year. There are many reasons for this, let us know about these reasons.

    • At the coaching level, it is seen that the number of girl students is more than that of boys. The reason for this could be that boys get support from the family in choosing civil service as a career as compared to girls.
    • Women candidates sometimes do not even get the right guidance, due to which they are unable to qualify at different stages of the exam.
    • For the past few years, more candidates clearing the UPSC exam are from engineering background. They get good exposure at the college level. Because of this, they start preparing well in advance.
    • Society’s pressure is also a reason, due to which women candidates who clear the exam sometimes give up their dreams. It takes two to three attempts to clear the exam, but sometimes due to the pressure of the society, they do not try more than this.
    • There is also pressure on women candidates to crack the exam as soon as possible. Many times pressure is also created from the family regarding marriage. Because of this, after giving the exam once or twice, women are not able to give it further.

The data shows that between 2001 and 2010, women performed better in the exam. In 2008, the pass percentage was 3.07 percent. However, from the second decade onwards, the success rate started decreasing. In 2019, the pass percentage in the prelims exam dropped to 0.86 per cent.
