Why is Yoga Day celebrated on 21st June?
The idea of celebrating International Day of Yoga was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2014. This resolution received huge support and response from the member states of the United Nations, after which it was adopted on 11 December 2014 and 21 June was declared as International Yoga Day.
According to the Hindu calendar, June 21 is the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere. After this the Sun becomes Dakshinayan. Because of this, the brightness of the sun decreases and the resistance to disease decreases. In such a situation, Yoga Day is celebrated every year on June 21 to make people aware of health.
