Airlines in the country need a large number of pilots. The demand for pilots has reached the highest level in three years. The reason for this is that airlines are trying to compensate for the reduced workforce during the pandemic. There has also been a rapid recovery in air travel. Due to this also the demand of pilots has come to a record level. There is more demand for senior commanders and trainers, who get the highest salary.
Airlines expansion plans
Air India also has a big plan for expansion. Last month, the airline placed an order for a record 540 aircraft, the largest order for jets in the history of modern aviation. The airline plans to induct more than 90 aircraft in the next year and a half. In such a situation, the airline is facing a huge shortage of pilots.
The level of scarcity can be gauged from the fact that it is offering a monthly salary of $21,000 to hire an expat commander for its Boeing 777 aircraft.
Airlines are taking these measures
India’s three biggest airlines – market leader IndiGo, Tata-owned Air India and India’s newest airline Akasa Air – together plan to hire more than a thousand pilots this year. This is the highest figure after 2018. Due to Indigo’s rapid addition of aircraft to its fleet, recruitment for pilots is also going on at a fast pace.
For the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, the airline is working on a rapid upgrade of First Officer to Commander. Apart from this, it is also dependent on bringing pilots from its sister companies Vistara and Air Asia, which are going to become a single unit by 2024 after the merger. According to reports, a representative of Indigo told that they are constantly in contact with the airline manufacturers, but for this they have not decided anything yet. In such a situation, no clear answer has been given by the Boeing Company in this matter.
