Electric cars are being promoted a lot all over the world. Not only common people but big companies are also singing his praises. Veteran cab service provider Uber has also announced that it will run EV cabs in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. The company plans to sell 25,000 vehicles in the next two years in collaboration with EV fleet partners. electric cars Will put on the streets. On the other hand, the government is also promoting electric vehicles fiercely, and also gives subsidy on buying battery operated vehicles.
Actually, it is believed that electric cars do not spread pollution, but a study by IIT Kanpur has challenged this claim. In a study by India’s legendary Institute of Technology, it has been claimed that electric cars spread more pollution than petrol-diesel cars. This claim is really shocking because till now it has been believed that electric cars are eco-friendly.
Electric Car: Promotion of pollution and also expensive
According to a report by the Engine Research Lab of IIT Kanpur, the manufacturing, running and scrapping of electric cars emit 15 to 50 per cent more greenhouse gases (GHGs) than petrol-diesel and hybrid cars.
Talking about the cost per kilometre, buying, insuring and maintaining an electric car is also 15-60 per cent costlier. However, the report claimed that hybrid cars are the most eco-friendly cars.
IIT Kanpur has done this study in collaboration with a Japanese organization. There were three types of categories – two foreign categories and one Indian category. This study was done to find out the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the vehicles.
Electric car and coal connection
Professor Avinash Agarwal of IIT Kanpur has done this study. He told that battery-powered electric cars (BEVs) are charged with electricity. In India, 75 percent of the electricity is generated from coal, which contains carbon-dioxide. It is well known that carbon-dioxide increases pollution.
Hybrid car gets a boost
The report claimed that hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) emit less pollution. Hybrid cars are better than petrol-diesel and electric cars. However, hybrid vehicles are much costlier than both these cars. Taxes on hybrid cars are high due to which they are expensive. That’s why the government should give as much subsidy on hybrid cars as on electric cars.
However, electric vehicles are a good option for taxi or cab service. On the other hand, buying and driving an electric car can be expensive for the common people.
